Profile Products Solutions for Summertime Vegetation ChallengesSummertime Vegetation Challenges: While many people enjoy summer for the sun and warm weather, these same conditions can create challenges when establishing vegetation, especially in more hot and arid regions. Fortunately, there are a few ways to improve the odds of success. Choosing native vegetation species, that are endemic to the area, can be an ideal way to ensure the vegetation is suited to local conditions like soil type, temperature and precipitation levels. This can reduce inputs, like fertilizer or lime, and reduce the need for initial watering. Regardless of species, soil testing can be an inexpensive way to understand how to create optimal conditions. Excess fertilizer application can increase the soluble salts in the soil solution. In arid conditions, these salts can further stress already struggling seedlings. For soils with high soluble salts, the use of some biostimulants can help reduce saline (high salt) conditions. For sodic soils (high sodium), the use of gypsum can reduce sodium levels. Remediation of these issues requires...Keep Reading

Stratavault Soil Cell SystemSoil Cell Systems for Urban Tree Development Webinar - September 4th at 12:30pm - Register Here - Bill Murphy, P.E. will be joined by Joe Kelly to cover Citygreen’s Stratavault™ soil cell system and the many benefits it provides. Enhancing community spaces with trees helps mitigate urban heat islands, achieve cities’ urban canopy targets and improve water quality. Trees in urban areas struggle due to a lack of soil volume for their tree roots and have an average life expectancy of 3-5 years. With Stratavault, urban trees can now live 50+ years. Soil cells provide structural support to surrounding sidewalks and roads while also creating a void space underneath for soil for the tree’s roots to grow. This webinar will cover product details and benefits, installation guidelines and case studies from some of our local ASP, Bowman, Quick Supply & Cascade projects.

Bill MurphyEngineer's Note from Bill Murphy, P.E.: Dirt Is Just Dirt, Right? Holy cow! My college geology professor would have snapped. “Soil. It is soil. Not dirt!” And no, all soils are not created equal. The term “soil” appears at least 85 times on each of our company websites, so it must be important to us. Civil engineers strive to design resilient and sustainable infrastructure that protects us and improves the quality of life. Soil and water health is critical to those designs. There are a variety of soils and soil tests. They all start with understanding your purpose for the soil. Roads, building foundations, bridge footings, railroads, and dams need a soil test that measures characteristics like shear strength, moisture content, permeability, specific gravity, and California bearing ratio (CBR). Geogrid and geosynthetics suppliers ask for soil test results as they make design recommendations for pavement subgrade correlated to which product you choose...Keep Reading
